For teens, an orthodontist can boost your self-esteem.

Between the ages of 11 and 14, I went through the growing pains of wearing braces on my teeth. Although I was eager to get them on my teeth at first, after a year of wearing them I couldn’t wait to get them off to see the positive results. Getting braces is a very smart investment because it not only gives you a beautiful smile, but also enhances your entire physical appearance and helps boosts your self-esteem.

During those early teenage years most males and females are struggling with trying to determine who they are and to be accepted by their peers. Physical disparities like crooked and misaligned teeth can make young teens insecure about their smiles and ultimately their entire physical appearance.

Overall, the orthodontist can improve your appearance with braces, which can have a positive psychological impact on you. This will improve your self-esteem, confidence, and social involvement.

Chewing more gum can actually be good for us.

For years, chewing gum has been used for enjoyment and pleasure. Recent research has proven that it can enhance productivity by increasing attention and reducing cognitive errors in the workplace.

Researchers discovered in four separate experiments that gum chewing can increase alertness, raise attention and focus, improve your well-being and performance in the workplace, and cause enhancement in cortisol levels. The researchers also noted that, how hard a person chews the gum or its gum flavor does not have any effect at all on the healthy benefits of gum chewing.

This information was truly fascinating to me, especially since I enjoy chewing gum on a regular basis. I now encourage you all to chew more gum because it has been proven to reduce anxiety, stress levels, depression, and help make you into the overall well-functioning human being that you’re meant to be.

Your baby is teething.

During your early childhood,  you will go through the pain of teething because it is a natural occurrence that is necessary for your grow and develop. You cannot avoid this phenomenon from occurring. It is important that you are well aware of the teething symptoms of pain, irritability, fever, sleep disturbance, mouthing/biting, feeding problems, runny nose, loose stools, infections, drooling, and red cheeks so that you can properly recognize them and help your child.

You should properly use diagnosed medication on your child for teething symptoms suppression. Two very common remedies are paracetamol (pain reliever) and topical analgesia.

Most of these symptoms that your young teething child will experience are very minor and can be easily addressed by the parents correctly, before meeting with a dentist.

Thumb sucking can be damaging for your oral health.

Many children suck their thumbs to calm themselves. Sucking the thumb causes young child to struggle with this unhealthy habit that they love and can’t seem to break. Sucking your thumb causes crooked teeth, overbites, and deformities(roof of mouth). This can lead to oral health issues by making it difficult to swallow foods and change their speech patterns.

This psychological or pleasure-seeking problem of sucking ones thumb can be resolved by either applying removable or fixed appliances in the child’s mouth, or an adhesive plaster onto the child’s sucking finger. However, this condition can reoccur if a child starts to suck their thumb again once they are no longer forced to stop.

As a community, we can be willing to work with our child so that they can avoid the potential long term negative effects of their actions.

Are wisdom teeth really that dangerous to keep?

I  had my wisdom teeth pulled when I was 17. They were protruding through my gums in the upper and lower jaws in the back of my mouth, and my oral & maxillofacial surgeon informed me that they could potentially cause serious health issues if I left them in.

Many people debate whether wisdom teeth should be removed. Some say that wisdom teeth should only be removed if they can potentially damage or rearrange their other teeth. While others believe that there is no use for wisdom teeth, so you can get rid of them.

Every patient is different. It is up to the patient if they want to have their wisdom teeth surgically removed, based upon their individual diagnosis given to them by their oral & maxillofacial surgeon.
